The Old Vicarage, a residential care home in Otterton, East Devon, was filled with autumn colours, familiar hymns and cherished traditions as residents came together to celebrate Harvest Festival last week.
The special service brought residents together to reflect on the season, enjoy familiar music and readings, and share a meaningful community experience. With a beautiful seasonal display and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the occasion was a lovely celebration of togetherness at our care home.
A beautiful harvest display of autumn colours
A big thank you to Sharon and Sue, who transformed the room with a wonderful display of seasonal fruit, vegetables, flowers and autumn treasures. From colourful produce to thoughtful decorative details, their efforts created a welcoming setting that captured the spirit of Harvest Festival.
The seasonal display added to the occasion, bringing the colours and familiar sights of autumn into the home and providing plenty to enjoy together.
A special Harvest Festival service
Angela and Anne led the Harvest Festival service, with residents joining in familiar hymns, readings and moments of reflection. The service offered an opportunity to enjoy well-loved traditions, share memories and come together in a relaxed and meaningful way.
We were also delighted to welcome Sarah, our new Vicar, who was introduced to everyone during the service. We look forward to welcoming her back for future visits and continuing this lovely connection with our local community.
The importance of meaningful activities in dementia care
At The Old Vicarage, we recognise the value of meaningful activities in supporting the wellbeing of older people, including those living with dementia. Familiar celebrations such as Harvest Festival can offer opportunities for reminiscence, recognition, music and social connection.
Seasonal displays, traditional hymns and shared celebrations can help residents connect with familiar experiences and take part in ways that feel comfortable and enjoyable to them. These thoughtful moments reflect our commitment to person-centred care, where individual interests, memories and preferences are valued.
For people living with dementia, familiar songs, seasonal sights and community traditions may also provide comforting points of recognition and encourage moments of connection with others.
